i live in phuket for 8 year now and what i think about BJJ,MMA, muay thai or any other matial art there is only tourist attraction , nothing for local or resident .nobody wan't to pay 20 000 a month for training ( price i pay for 1 year training in france ). it's just business sport here . i do training in phuket with some friend from europe when they come for vacation . maybe it's time to think to do more for local ....

This whole message is bizarre. I am a head instructor in Phuket and can't agree with the comments.

I was glad to hear Adam became the first resident BJJ BB in Thailand. Way before I ever arrived in Phuket, Adam and his wife came to Tiger *back when it was a hole in the wall gym* and taught a seminar for the school.

Luke has always helped promote our events.

Mark Simmerman has stopped into the gym to roll/hang out with the guys...

and all the BKK gyms supported our Nevertap tournament.

That is a lot of support from a region that is an hour flight from Phuket (picture a school in LA, and a school in Vegas)

If you don't share your name...or even what region of thailand your from...your a troll.

I'm thinking these things take their time to develop, but I guess people just have to remain positive to the growth of the community here in SE Asia :)

Feel free to e-mail me at bjjasia@gmail.com with your ideas on how the BJJAT can better serve the entire BJJ/Grappling community of Thailand. If I'm not aware of a team that would like to be involved and help support future events, please share their contact information with me.

Currently, the BJJAT is a loose connection of teams (mostly in Bangkok) that have come together to produce such events as the Thailand BJJ/Grappling Open which took place this past September 2008. BJJAT along with SEABJJ will also promote the Bangkok portion of Mauricio 'Tinguinha' Mariano seminar tour April 25-26 2009. The only requirement the BJJAT has to be a member is to actively support/help organize events by way of:

*volunteering time: referee, timing, score-keeping, check-in counter, secure sponsorship, advertise events, etc.

*financial support or help network to find sponsors

*cooperation in the organization/production of major tournaments; Thailand Open

Personally, I have made no money from any events organized by the BJJAT. I have invested my own money in producing t-shirts and other promotional material, spent considerable amount of time doing graphic design, marketing and securing competitors from all over SEA. But I am just one part of the whole. Without the volunteering of Mark Simmerman, Niti, Sebastien Desvignes, Taichi Takano, entire EMAC Team, Alex Berezovik, FBT sports, Torajiro, Samitijev Hospital, Mikko, Sean Lynch, Adam Kayoom, Morgan Perkins, Ofer Lidar Ray Elbe and all participating teams, the event would not have been the success that it was.

If you would like to be a part of this, by all means please help and volunteer.

I think this is new territory for all of us so it'd be great to hear how you think the 'association' in Thailand can participate with other federations.

I know there is a newly formed jiu-jitsu federation in Thailand but that is traditional jiu-jitsu and we have no formal relationship with them.

As a member of the BJJAT, I've always made an effort to connect with schools outside of Bangkok like TMT/MMA Phuket (Will & Ray), Legacy Gym (Ole Laursen), Fairtex Pataya (Italian guy, name escapes me right now), Thai Judo programs and with smaller clubs like ASB-MMA (Richard Escobar) or Boxer Rebellion (Leigh & Aaron).

We are working on the plans for the upcoming Thailand Open for September 19-20, so it's a great time now to hear some suggestions.

One thing that rubbed me wrong about the Thailand BJJ Federation...Is the fact that they only converse with the BKK schools.
