Finished the first day of our two-day seminar with American BJJ black-belt from Paragon Jiu-Jitsu, Jeff Glover. Today covered techniques with the gi, all of which I believe were quite unique to Jeff and his approach to grappling. Obvious ones that he's become quite famous for such as the deep-half-guard but also others that I have never seen in my relatively short time training. A true melding of the grappling arts, Jeff is an exceptional athlete, competitor and ambassador for jiu-jitsu out of the US. I remember at my first tournament in 2005 as a white-belt is where I witnessed Jeff beat a buddy of mine, then a purple-belt. So it's with great pleasure that I get to see things come full circle and 7+ years later learn from the man himself.
In addition to Jeff coming all the way from the US, we had several guests in house as well. Ralph Gracie black-belts Peter 'Crazy' Doyle from Berkeley, Ben Weinstein head instructor at BKKBJJ and ATT black-belt Adam Kayoom from Q23. So nothing short of an impressive first day.
I don't want to spoil things since that's for you to find out by attending any of the upcoming seminars on Jeff's SEABJJ tour. That's right! Following Bangkok, Jeff will be making his way to Bali at Synergy Jiu-Jitsu, then Leverage Combat Academy in Kuala Lumpur and closing things off at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket.
I will say this. The seminar today was probably one of the most refreshing and FUN seminars I've attended in some time and I've been to quite a few. It's not so common you'll find a black-belt at Jeff's level that is as completely open to new ideas and sources for inspiration in his game. They are equally humbling as they are inspiring since it all comes down to what will keep it fun and keep you from ever giving up this great art. Will be posting an interview with Jeff shortly after his stint in Bangkok but be on the look out for a special raffle at the end of the tour. If you attend any one of the seminars on the tour, you are eligible to win a Bull Terrier rashguard or short. More to be announced.
Limited edition t-shirts have been made for this tour which go to help support events like this so get them while they last.
