Photo below from Andy Foxx Photography - see his Penny gallery here. (ripped from Meerkatsu blog)

Since I geek-out on all things BJJ, I'm curious to know what brands the women of BJJ like best. So if you are a female BJJ practitioner, no-gi grappler or MMA fighter, please share your thoughts. You are welcome to e-mail me your answers or share them on the comments page of this post. -Luke

1. Favorite Gi - Atama Women's Gi. I own six gis of different brands, and Atama is the best-fitting for me. Being a small-framed woman, the A0/M4 size of other brands (Atama, Vulkan, Keiko) gives a loose fit around the body but tight around the neck, making it uncomfortable to roll in.

2. cotton shirt under the gi, rashguard for no-gi

3. any surfing shorts I can find :)

4. There are only a few that's available in the market compared to men's products. But then again, this is a male-dominated sport. However, I think manufacturers realize that even if there is only a small number of female BJJ practitioners, we are a big market since we are big on shopping :) The products specifically for women are growing.

5. A0/M4-sized gis don't give a comfortable fit for small-framed Asian women. I believe they are a bit overpriced, too (lilac Vulkan, for one).

Same as Jonna, I like Atama women's gi, they fit just right being tailored specifically for women.

I prefer rashguards or training tops like the dryfit tops from major brands. I really like the Keiko Raca rashguards as they are so light and allow you to 'breathe'.

I like Atama grappling shorts, but I wish they were a bit longer. I like skin tight 3/4 pants as well.

One of the biggest concerns for me is training tops. I like crop tops or training tops that are fitted, but so many are just so low cut and thus not appropriate for BJJ! I like a certain boxing brand as their tops are high cut and thus not too revealing. The main thing is due to having to cover up slightly more, it is important to have gear that is lightweight :)

Definitely hands down my Ouano Pink Gi. The fit is amazing and so is the color. I have about 4 Gi's right now. 2 are normal gi's while the other 2 are women gi's and I find I prefer the fit of the women gi's better. Lots of people say there's no difference in size between A1 and the F1/F2 but I believe there is. I have two keikos, the normal A1 Keiko and a F1 women's Keiko (2009 Girl's Gi, the pink + white one) and the fit is sooooooooo different. My A1 Keiko doesn't have an allowance for my butt while my F1 Keiko does. I now only buy Women specific Gi's and will not even consider a Male/Unisex one. My next Gi I hope to get is a Fenom Kimono, Tatami or OTM Girl's Gi.

-Do you prefer t-shirt or rashguard when training and which one is your favorite?
Neither, I prefer Sport Tops (like Adidas, Nike,) with built in bratops, I don't like t-shirts or rashguards cause they don't provide the support I need in ummm you know where 8D But for No-Gi there's no choice, it has to be a rashguard.

-What is your favorite grappling shorts?
I have none.... Hahhaha I usually just get some workout sports tights. They don't make grappling shorts my size!!!! (too big, no allowance for the butt, too long, etc...) And the only ones I see they make for women are like booty shorts! It's bad enough that I'm worried about my game I don't need to worry about Camel Toe lol

-Do you feel the products out on the market are addressing your needs as a practitioner and competitor?
Yes for the ones that do, they have made allowances that plague girls such as a butt allowance, tapered waist, smaller shoulders, etc... I was worried at first that it was just a color change and girl's gi were gimicks but my Keiko's prove my wrong.

-What are your complaints about the gear you have now?
Well for the women Gis I have no complaints. But for the unisex/male Gi's the fit is damn wrong.

-What do you want to see more of in regards to gear/equipment for ladies?
I hope more brands (e.g. Koral) will have women's range so there are more choices available.

Lol Su Ling, you are so right, I love the Atama grappling shorts for how they feel and fit, but they are so like booty shorts, ha ha! Built in bras in training tops are also a must ;)

What is your favorite gi and why?
So far i've tried Vulcan, Lucky, Atama, Koral, Catfight, and Fenom. My favorite is my koral Classic. It fits me perfect!! It is just tight enough to allow free movement, but not not have a lot of excess material for my opponent to grab. The two female gi's i've tried i have not been impressed by. My Catfight gi has not held up as well as i have hoped. When it gets soaked in sweat it kind of hangs on me and the loops to the drawstring have come off. It also took 6 weeks for them to send it to me... My white fenom gi i just got a few weeks ago and it shrunk way too much. They need to change there size chart online. It also feels really thin like it is going to rip and not last very long.

-Do you prefer t-shirt or rashguard when training and which one is your favorite?
I'm defiantly a rashguard girl. I've tried to wear a t-shirt before and the cotton soaks up my sweat and just hangs on me... It's terrible. I love my OTM rashguard. It's extra long so it doesn't ride up and show my midsection when i'm training.

-What is your favorite grappling shorts?
I train mostly gi so this doesn't really apply to me. I only have one pair of shorts i use at tournaments, so i can't compare or contrast the different brands...

-Do you feel the products out on the market are addressing your needs as a practitioner and competitor?
I really don't feel they are. All the female specific brands out there are just cheesy and need to stop throwing pink on everything. Yes, we are female, but it doesn't mean we like pink.

-What are your complaints about the gear you have now?
My biggest complaint is that the female specific gear i have is of a lesser quality than the male versions. It tends to cost more and not last as long.

-What do you want to see more of in regards to gear/equipment for ladies?
I really would like to see less pink on everything and better quality gear/ products. I wish there was a bigger variation of female brands for us to choose from. I also wish that the male brands created smaller sizes so that females could better use there products.

-What is your favorite gi and why?
I've tried Keiko and Adidas but the best fitting gi for me is Atama. My F1 fits me to a T! I recently ordered a kid's size Bull Terrier so I have yet to see how that fits.

-Do you prefer t-shirt or rashguard when training and which one is your favorite?
I like both. I like the rashguards of Under Armour and Koral.

-What is your favorite grappling shorts?
I use volcom boardshorts or leggings.

-What are your complaints about the gear you have now?
Women's gi's are more expensive!

-What do you want to see more of in regards to gear/equipment for ladies?
More affordable gis in a wider size range. I agree with Jonna!
