JJFC: GRAND OPENING

Here is some added news from Marcos Escobar on his recent visit to Shanghai. Marcos is based in Malaysia and recently headed the first BJJ Camp which on all accounts was a great success. -Luke

Last week China has given a huge step to develop BJJ around not only in that area but for sure in the whole Asia.
On the 8th of december has officialy started the Jiu Jitsu Federation Of China (JJFC) with headquarters in Shanghai. With total support of JJFJ (Jiu Jitsu Federation of Japan) it has brought all the way from Brazil, black belt Chico Mendes, who will be living in China & responsable to help spreading BJJ around that area. For it's 1st week, JJFC has count with the presence of two more black belts Leo Vieira, that came also from Brazil & Marcos Escobar currently living and teaching in Malaysia. Both of them came to Shanghai to give total support for the initiative. During the Opening Cerimony more than 100 people could see many techniques and videos about BJJ. In the end of the event all were invited for a trial class under Chico Mendes & Leo Vieira. JJFC has as it's main goal to spread BJJ around China and help developing the sport in that country. The federation itself is keen to help all BJJ clubs in China to grow and make the sport even stronger. JJFC President Mr. Yamada Shigetaka and all his Team will imput all efforts to make it happens in China.

You can visit JJFC website @ www.jjfcn.org

Cheers,
Marcos Escobar

MICKEY CHOI: REVISED PROFILE

Over the past week since posting Mickey's profile to the 'resident black-belts' section of BJJ-ASIA, there has been a tremendous amount of information against Mickey's accomplishments and status as a BJJ black-belt. While the majority of the comments made were by anonymous readers, I was able to receive confirmation from several individuals that have first-hand experience with Mickey. -Luke

GERALD HARRIS

http://www.slcbjj.com/machadoslc/
Gerald is one of the earliest writers to speak against Mickey from Machado-Utah. Here are a few excerpts from an e-mail I received from Gerald about Mickey.

Mickey was one of my best friends for quite a while. I honestly care a lot about the guy but he made a "business decision" (his words). And started to wear a black belt. He received his purple from Jeff Kunze before the PanAms in 2007....

A couple of weeks after the PanAms, Mickey had a very tough time . . . actually he was crushed in both the Gi and No-Gi competitions, Mickey went to Brazil and when he came back he was wearing a black belt. The rest of the story is in the post linked to from the blog address you sent me....

Mickey on the other hand just is not a black belt. He is not a Machado representative.

JOHN FRANKL

http://cafe.daum.net/jfbjj
I had the pleasure of meeting John when he was in Bangkok a few months back on business and took the opportunity to ask if he had met Mickey or knew of his new academy.

This guy did show up for a while. He is not good at all. He wore a white belt and performed like a white belt. A bit later he has his own school. Whatever.
...

DAVE JOHNSON

http://www.slcbjj.com/machadoslc/
taken from comments section of BJJ-ASIA:

I am in full agreement with Gerald. He and I trained with Dave Hagon and Mickey. Mickey is a purple belt, he left for brazil and was there for 15 days then came back saying he was a black belt under eduardo telles (which is a lie and telles confirmed it was a lie at a local tournament here). Mickey is not a legitimate black belt...he promoted himself as far as we can tell..as for the national championship..its my understanding there was 1 other guy..and he didnt show. He has trained under Rob Handley, Jeff Kunze, and both of them will tell you that he is not a black belt...barely even a purple if that. Mickey has a rough day ahead if he ever enters utah again. in fact..the machado utah team will involve attorneys if mickey ever again claims to be affiliated in any way with us. He is not legitimate in any way.

AARON HUNTSMAN

www.lehijudo.com

To whom it may concern,

My name is Aaron Huntsman head of Lehi Judo Club in Lehi, Utah. I want to set the record straight regarding Mickey Choi. It has come to my attention that Mickey is claiming to have a black belt in Judo from our club. This is completely false.

Mickey trained with us for a few months this year (2008) but never received any rank from our club. As far as we are concerned, he is still a white belt, novice competitor in Judo. I considered him a friend, but I cannot allow him to use the reputation of our school to misrepresent others. If you have any questions or need specific information, feel free to contact me.

Aaron Huntsman

2 NEW BJJ FEDERATIONS IN ASIA

It's been a very exciting year for BJJ in SEA and what a way to cap off the year but to announce 2 new BJJ federations in Asia. The links have already been added to the blog but if you haven't checked them out so far, here are the links. BJJFP
***Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Philippines -The BJJFP is headed by Stephen Kamphuis and is recognized by the IBJJF. The federations objective as shown on the site:

'We wish to insure the integrity of the sport and recognition to the participants and supporters of BJJ in the Philippines.'

CHARTER
-Ensure we act as a conduit to the International BJJ Federation for the benefit of the members of the sport

-Implimentation of the sanctioned rules as per IBJJF for competitions and other requirements for BJJ participants

-Hosts recognized local Regional, National and International competitions for the benefit of the sport

-Work with the IBJJF in the implementation of the requirements and rules for the sport of BJJ

-Not to interfere with the running of the schools but to ensure that participants and new members have data base of recognized schools and instructors

-Compile a data base of student grades

-Work with other International recognized BJJ Federations

-Provide an information medium for the sport

JJFC
***Jiu-Jitsu Federation of China
-The JJFC being the newer of the two is recognized by the JJFJ (Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Japan) which is apart from the IBJJF. The JJFJ is in connection with Rickson Gracie and Axis Jiu-Jitsu in Japan. This past week, three BJJ black-belts were in Shanghai to help inaugurate the new federation and it's academy. Marcos Escobar, Chico Mendes and Leo Vieira.

-The most recent news can be found on Marcos Escobar's blog at http://escobarbjj.blogspot.com/. It looks as though Chico Mendes will be staying in Shanghai as head instructor at the new academy.

-While I am still waiting on more details concerning the founding members of this federation and its incorporation of the existing BJJ academies in China, I think it's fair to note the schools/persons that have set the foundation for BJJ in China. This would include:

Andy Pi
BEIJING BJJ (10+ years)

Chet Quint
BLACK TIGER ACADEMY

Stanley Tam & Ryan Melchiano
SHANGHAI BJJ

Tiago Afonso & Nuno Santos

MACAU BJJ

Warren Wang
TAIWAN BJJ

Thomas Fan

Registration for the Asian Trials for the WORLD PROFESSIONAL JIU-JITSU CUP are now open for those outside of Japan via e-mail. A few details have changed concerning the event so be sure to check the site WWW.JJFJ.ORG.

Here is a video about the ABU DHABI PRO.

The ABU DHABI PRO is an event with a focus on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Participants compete to win GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE medals, and also big prize money. The objective is to turn the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into a professional sport.

12.13.2008

NEVERTAP ASIA: PHUKET, THAILAND

January 17th, 2009 will be the Nevertap Submission Grappling Tournament held at the Tiger Muay Thai training facility in Phuket Thailand. This event will be hosted by MMA Phuket.

WHAT EXACTLY IS NEVERTAP?
For those of you unfamiliar with Nevertap, this is the same Nevertap tournament that has witnessed several of the top Submission Wrestlers from the USA competing. Previous Nevertap competitors include Marc Laimon, Nick Diaz, Mac Danzig, Joe "Big Daddy" Stevenson, Tyrone Glover, Bill Cooper, and countless others.

HOW IS THIS TOURNAMENT SPECIAL?

Rather than having matches "Scored" similar to a traditional BJJ tournament matches are "judged" by a panel of qualified judges.
Matches start from the standing position and are held inside of a matted MMA ring or competition style mma cage. Participants are encouraged to compete for the submission and are penalized for stalling strategies. Matches will consist of 3 rounds of 3 minutes, with a submission signifying the end of the match.
Tournament is double elimination, guaranteeing every participant a minimum of two matches.
*This means you will not travel only to the tournament only to get a tough first round match and sit as a spectator the rest of the day*

HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST?
Tournament pricing includes a free Nevertap t-shirt to everyone attending the post event BBQ. As an added bonus, every Nevertap match will be video recorded and uploaded on Youtube allowing participants the opportunity to evaluate their performance and set new goals for their next competition.
MMA Phuket has sponsored the Nevertap event and is offering a special discounted competition fee available to guest training or vacationing at the Tiger Muay Thai facility before Monday January 12th, 2009.
Use the grappling tournament travel opportunity to cross train your submission grappling with World Class Muay Thai instructors and Veteran MMA Fighters.

Nevertap Competition Registration Fee is 1,750 baht (1,500 baht for TMT Guests) BBQ Additional 350 baht

POST TOURNAMENT BBQ
The best thing about competing is the opportunity to meet new friends from around the world. In the spirit of good sportsmanship and athletic competition Tiger Muay Thai will be hosting an after tournament event BBQ.NEVERTAP participants are encouraged to stick around after the competition to enjoy a night of ALL YOU CAN EAT BBQ, recreational drinking, Karaoke, and several exhibition MMA, Muay Thai, and Boxing matches.

The cost of the BBQ is 350 baht, which includes admission for the smoker fights, and a free event T-shirt.

Wanna Fight Compete in a MMA Exhibition Bouts?
We are currently matchmaking for the MMA fights. If you are interested in competing inside a real MMA Cage imported from the USA send us your martial arts background, weight, and experience level. If you have any videos of you competing in grappling, boxing, muay thai, MMA, or any other combative sport please include links to those as well. We are actively looking to promote several fairly matched opponents. Any who participates in the MMA Exhibition Bouts will recieve free admission to the BBQ and their Nevertap tournament registration fee will be sponsored. (meaning you don't have to pay!!!) All MMA Bouts will be video recorded and edited for Youtube.

Check out some of the previous MMA Fights

How Can I register for this Event?

2008 PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL BJJ/NO-GI CHAMPIONSHIP

12.09.2008

2008 PHILIPPINES BJJ & NO-GI INTERNATIONAL

I have the results from this past weekend with a quick commentary from Stephen Kamphuis, the organizer of the tournament. -Luke

I would like to thank all the Local and International Teams who supported
this year event.

A special mention should go to the Singapore contingent who brought in a
large Junior Team of competitors as young as 7 years old. Beside some great individual results the Singapore team also won the Team throphy against a team of three children ages 7-9 from the Philippines. It was a great experience for the kids and we hope this will lead to future events between the two countries.

There where some great fights during the comp with some divisions topping 25 competitors and the Absolute White belt division coming in at the cut off mark with 32 competitors.

The standard is improving at each comp and the teams are growing. This year we had several special awards for each day:
Agip Most technical Fighter
Agip Most promising Junior ( BJJ Comp Only )
Agip Best match of the day ( Basic and White belt)
Agip best match of the day ( Blue and Intermediate )

T-Shirts donated by Crossface where given to the No Gi Absolute winners.
We would like to thank our sponsars :
Pocari and Alaska gave out free samples during the event:
Pepsi , MTG, Pocara, Alaska Yoghurt , Top Ten , AGIP, Daedo, Activ, Dax

The event was co presented by SM Mall of Asia , Sports Central and KMA Fitness and Martial Arts.

Sincerely,
Stephen Kamphuis

HOME

Just got back last night and it's nice to be in warmer climates. While most of the world is experiencing a cold winter, it's the best time to be in Bangkok as far as the weather is concerned. A bit quiet at the airport but that' to be expected. It's seriously unfortunately how politics have effected the country in the past several years but I have faith it's for a better future. Bangkok continues to be a safe place live in and visit.

Things to report on but that'll come out later in the week. -Luke

TOKYO

Just got in to Tokyo last night and will be in town for just a couple of days. Well, that's if things in Bangkok settle by this Friday. Not sure what time I will have to train while here but I did bring my gi just in case. Thank goodness it's not nearly as cold here as it was in DC.

I want to thank everyone for their comments regarding the recent interview with me about the SEA scene. Always wish I could do more but it's already a great opportunity to share what's going on here. I'm sure we will see a growing interest from abroad this coming year.

Another quick note, a new school as opened in Beijing, China called MMA Beijing. Check it out in the links section. They brought a number of competitors to Pedro Schmall & Beijing BJJ's tournament this past fall. They are planning to hold another such tournament this January 17th. More info on that to come.

Take care everyone and wish me luck on getting back home, haha. -Luke

COMIN' HOME

I just finished listening to the FIGHTWORKS PODCAST, episode #145 with Saulo Ribeiro talking about his new book + a little interview with yours truly. Listening back to my answers, I know that I wasn't able to cover each area but thought it was a decent introduction to the scene. It's made me want to return to recording the beginnings of BJJ each location and the people involved. I have a few back-stories already posted on the blog but it may be a new project to pursue in the near future to cover all of them.

Tomorrow I leave for Tokyo, just two days after the Asia Championships but not feeling too bad considering my friends in Bangkok who were planning on competing were forced to cancel their trip due to ongoing protests in Thailand. While it continues to be a very safe place to be (Bangkok), the country and it's economy have taken a beating because of these political conflicts. Let's hope things are resolved soon for everyone's sake.
