SEND ME PICS + VIDEO!!!

OK Guys. This is for all those in Singapore and Guam that are competing this weekend or have already competed. SEND ME PICTURES + VIDEO!

I heard just the other day that there is a super-fight scheduled at the Guam tournament between Daisuke Sugie (Alive JP) versus Mike Fowler (Purebred/Loyd Irvin). Wow! Sugie has been a long running BJJ champion out of Japan. Fowler of course with a very strong competitive record with wins over such legends as Saulo Ribeiro at ADCC and more. I believe Sugie may have some weight over Fowler but it promises to be a great match nonetheless. Damn I'm jealous!

Today is also the no-gi portion of the tournament in Singapore. Let's see some images.

TAIWAN: TOURNAMENT RECAP NO-GI

NO-GI (AUG 23, 2008)
The following day was another tough day of competition with a little less of the judo contingency present but still there nevertheless. The divisions were split to 'novice, advanced and elite' with larger weight brackets from under and over 74 kilos. This brought a greater mix of weight differences and games but all in all some cool match ups.

There were definite rematches from the previous day which turned some surprising results as the players got to formulate their game plans. Unfortunately I still fell to the infamous close-guard game of Harold in the final 'round-robin' for 74kg+. Even so, I felt I really got to express my jiu-jitsu at this tournament and when I was able to play my game, I did quite well. There was no easy match and being there by myself with everyone else coaching/cheering for your opponent, it can definitely eat at you, haha.

There was one judo-guy that really surprised me with his grappling. O
n the lighter end, he was a dominant figure in the gi but in the no-gi he posed just as much trouble. These are the kinds of guys that you want to recruit to your academy, borrow him for a few days from the judo team, hehe. If you catch him in the photos, he's skinny guy with green, long-sleeve shirt I think (description kinda sucks). Sorry I don't have his name.

Next up is the ELITE DIVISION

TAIWAN: TOURNAMENT RECAP GI

So here's a little back-story to my attending the Taiwan tournament. Last year this time I was in the US for some reason and was unable to attend and was forced to live vicariously through the accomplishments of my teammates who had gone. They spoke of having such a great time that I promised myself that I would go the following year. I hadn't been to Taiwan in over 14 years so I was curious to know how things had changed since the mid-90's. Always a tough group at the tournaments, I knew the guys in Taiwan are serious about their jiu-jitsu. Another hilight for me would be the Baret Yoshida seminar and other guest black-belts who would compete in the NO-GI ELITE DIVISION. GI (AUG 22, 2008)
So this time around I committed myself to competing in the heavyweight division with those giants and didn't bother to cut any weight, hehe. I also learned my lesson and made sure I focused on what I was there to do which was to compete first, then cover the event second. So thankfully no injuries this time besides the normal tournament aches.
The morning started well as I had gotten in the night before and checked in to my quiet 'love hotel' just a quick taxi ride away from the community sports center. Which by the way is something I wish Bangkok would have since this place ( the sports center) was really nice. Several story building committed to housing events and sports facilities like judo, kendo and ping pong! One of the guest teams was the Da-tong Judo Team which did a great job of putting themselves in there, mixing it up. Some did better than others but it was an inspiring thing to see the coaches show their interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and expose their students to the benefits of cross training. I'm sure us BJJ guys learned a thing or two as well. The lighter guys made the bulk of the competitors at this comp, showing fast-paced and technical matches. The two guys that really stuck out in my mind when I think about the lighter divisions are Kai and Isaac. Being that they're teammates, I'm sure they know each others games quite well so it was nice to see what they would push for on the mat.

As for me, I lost the first round in my weight division by 1 advanta
ge with the score 0-0 but was able to come back with two more wins in the absolute to take me to the finals where I would meet the same giant. Unfortunately for me I lost this one by points. I knew coming into this that it wouldn't be easy and I definitely walk away with a lot to work on but that's also what makes me excited to get back to training this week. Hopefully my pics do a better job of describing what it was like and the intensity of the fights. I want to thank all the guys I fought this weekend and to everyone that came compete and support the scene.I think there is also a shout out in order as Vova from Taiwan BJJ Academy was promoted this weekend to blue-belt after a great showing this tournament. Guys, look out for this one, haha. We hope to see him in Bangkok this September.

BJJ SPIRITS MAGAZINE

Suzuki-san from BJJ Spirits w/ Naoya Uematsu @ Taiwan BJJ/Grappling Tournament 2008
(L to R) Aramaki, Taki, Uematsu, Suzuki

This past weekend I got my very own copy of the 4th edition of BJJ SPIRITS magazine. In this particular issue, there is an entire section on the Hong Kong BJJ scene + coverage of the Cope De Hong Kong 2 tournament. Preceding the black-belt super-fights there is a significant hilight reel of all us regular guys which makes it a real treat for those who competed. I see/hear a lot of familiar faces and voices on these clips, haha.

Besides that, there is a printed section of the Hong Kong scene, most of the teams that competed as well as the regular series of techniques and interviews of the BJJ celebs we all know. It's definitely a great production and resource for BJJ, regardless if you can read Japanese or not. If you haven't already, get yourself a copy or snag someone else's.

Thanks to Suzuki-san and the boys at Kowloon BJJ.

BLOG NEWS

I had a great weekend in Taipei and took a ton of pictures which I will post as soon as I can. I want to thank everyone from Taiwan BJJ for putting on a great event. Like always, I got to make some new friends and come away with more fire to train and improve. There is nothing stagnant about the scene in SEA as with each event the caliber of competitors just gets better and better.

I will write a full recap tomorrow but for now I must nurse my sore body, haha.

A special thanks to Warren and the organizers of the event, Baret for the awesome seminar and sick jiu-jitsu display, Jon for his hospitality and Vaughn for the tour of Taipei nightlife, haha.

Also thanks to everyone for their support in buying the SEABJJ shirts, thanks guys.

MMA PHUKET: BBQ BEATDOWN

The annual Full Moon BBQ’s hosted by Tiger Muay Thai are becoming legendary. This edition of amateur fights was no exception. With celebrity guests; 7x UFC Vet Alan Belcher and 2005 Abu Dhabi Brazilian Qualifying champion BJJ Black Belt Tony Eduardo in attendance, a 5 bout fight card was highlighted by two MMA matches.

The first MMA bout featured Ireland’s #3 ranked Featherweight Damo Rooney Vs. Art Of War- Beijing veteran Ngoo Ditty of Thailand. Ngoo showcased improved wrestling and submission defense before eventually falling victim to a fight ending armbar via Damo Rooney half way through the second round.

The nights Main event featured KOTC Pay-Per View Veteran Charles Cosens of the USA Vs. Java Indonesia Gold Medalist Mike “Hutch” Hutchison of Canada. Both of these fighters suffered opening round loses during last month’s 4 man amateur tournament. Showcasing improved skill and displaying a true warrior spirit both of these fighters received a standing ovation from the crowd after their hard fought battle. Charlie won the fight via a controversial split decision.

I WON!!!

As a proud member of the 'mighty 600,000' I decided to enter a few designs in the Fightworks Podcast patch-design contest. Well, this Sunday they announced my design as the winner which I must admit surprised me quite a bit. This is the first time I've ever won a contest like this so it makes it especially sweet that my design will represent the show that I listen to every week as you all should. Just wanted to extend a thank you to Caleb, Dan and all those involved in the selection process. I have no doubt there were some sick designs in the running and would love to see those get some attention in the future as well.

For those who aren't listening to the show, check it out here:

OTHER:

I can't believe August is almost over as we're approaching the 3rd week of the month. I and a teammate will be heading to Taipei for the tournament this coming weekend. I will be sure to take a ton of pictures when I am not focusing on my matches. I think I learned a hard but good lesson from the last tournament in Hong Kong, haha so one thing at a time. I haven't been to Taipei in over 14 years so it'll be cool to check it out and see what I can remember. Another hilight will be the Baret Yoshida seminar which I hope to get a few minutes to chat and see what he's been up to lately. If you're not familiar with the Japanese BJJ scene, two local guys will be there as well to compete in the no-gi elite division. Naoya Uematsu and Makoto Aramaki. The first time I knew about Uematsu-san was as a brown-belt against Bibiano Fernandes at the Ground Impact comp. Great showing and soon after I believe he received his black-belt. Aramaki-san is now the head instructor at Kowloon BJJ, making his new home in Hong Kong. It looks to be an exciting weekend.

Don't forget, the following weekend will be nuts as there are three major events going on at the same time but in different locations. Tournaments in both Singapore and Guam + the Royler Gracie seminar in Bali at Syngery Jiu-Jitsu. SEND ME PICS! SEND ME PERSONAL ACCOUNTS OR REPORTS. I do a decent job of getting the tournament results from the organizers but I would love to post your pics and personal comments on the events that I can't attend. Take part and share your experiences!

INTERVIEW W/ MARK 'VESUVIUS' SIMMERMAN

Vesuvius with youngest son, Joel.
Many of you have probably already met Mark since he's quite the mat-rat in Southeast Asia. As one of the active members of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association of Thailand, we took a few moments to ask him about his background in jiu-jitsu and the improvements he's helped implement to make this coming tournament in Bangkok such a unique one. -Luke

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us on BJJ-ASIA. While I may already know you, could you share a bit about yourself to those reading that may not?

I am a scientist, an infectious disease epidemiologist to be precise. I conduct research and do outbreak investigations when I am not on the mat training. I have two sons, 19 and 17, who are both now bigger and stronger than I am. They make me proud like only a Dad can be. Twenty plus years ago, I was a wrestler in High School. It was like magic for me stepping back onto the mat. I just love the camaraderie of training and competing against other guys who are really dedicated to the sport and science of Jiu-jitsu. And I love the high levels of fitness that BJJ helps me attain.

And how long have you been training BJJ?

I am 42 and started training when I was 37. Like most of us, especially the older guys, I have had more than my share of injuries which sometimes kept me from training for weeks. I also spent one year in Vietnam where I was not able to train BJJ. I did some Judo and stayed fit, and could not wait to move back to Bangkok to resume training BJJ. I travel a lot for work and I always bring my gi. BJJ makes every trip better because I always find a great academy to train at no matter where I travel. BJJ people are almost always welcoming. I then get to experience more of the city I am visiting because those guys are always willing to go out and party a little after training.

You took gold in the blue-belt seniors division at the last Pan Ams. What was the training like in preparation and could you share with us some details from your matches?

I went to the Pan-Ams in early 2007 for the first time. It was pretty intimidating for me since I was there basically by myself and it is a huge tournament, noisy and crowded. I was fairly shocked at the level of fitness and skills demonstrated by guys who are considered to be "old men" by the "20 somethings" who dominate competitive BJJ. I was a ball of nerves but managed to take home a Bronze medal in my weight and age. More importantly, I took home a different perspective on BJJ after watching dozens of very high level matches close-up. It was awesome. I came back to Bangkok and went back to the drawing board so to speak, focusing on improving my technique, improving my flexibility by yoga practice, calming my nerves on the competition mat, and greatly improving my fitness levels.

I wanted to go back to the Pan-Ams in 2008 and win the Gold.

During the rest of 2007 I competed in every regional tournament I could and had good success. I learned a lot about how to win at competition, where the best BJJ player is not always the winner. And I began a core strength training program that focuses on hundreds of body weight exercises and short-interval high-intensity training, plus yoga in the "off" days or when I am injured. Check out www.crossfit.com to see what I am talking about. In the process without any change in my diet, I dropped about 5-6 kilos and now usually walk around at 77-78kgs.

This year the PanAms were even larger but I was much better prepared and had the support of Roberto Traven and his crew. I train at Roberto's academy in Atlanta when I am in the US and Roberto's presence made a big difference. Still, it was pretty crazy as the announcers called my name way too early, then sent me back to the bleachers, then called me back to wait another 30 minutes in the waiting area. My first opponent was a no-show, so I waited some more. Then the official had some problem with my gi patches on my knees and sent me to find new gi pants at the last minute. I was stressed out something terrible. Anyway, I managed to get through to the finals and scored a nice single-leg to forward trip takedown (thanks Adam Kayoom) on my opponent that secured me the win and the medal that I wanted.

So with this experience, how do you see competition as a component to an individual's growth in sport jiu-jitsu?

I think competition is important but I also think in some cases it is given too much emphasis, especially as it relates to higher belt promotions (purple and up). A lot of people just are not mentally or physically prepared for competition, or are just plain not interested in that aspect of the sport. In my travels and training in different places, I have met many, many guys who have spent 6+ years as blue or purple belts and cant seem to get promoted mainly because they choose not to compete. You also have to consider that there are many older people, women and people with certain physical limitations (previous surgeries, certain handicaps, etc) who are training BJJ these days. These people show a huge amount of self-discipline, commitment and focus, often while juggling careers and families, yet often get relatively ignored in the academy compared to the 24 year old aspiring MMA athlete who is training in the same gym.

And with your experience, you're also one of the leading members in the production of the FBT Thailand BJJ/Grappling Open. Could you tell us what brought you to this point in wanting to organize your own tournament?

Having competed twice in the PanAms, I knew the components of a really well-organized tournament and what a difference that can make in terms of the overall experience for the competitor. The PanAms were challenging but also very fun- the IBJJF knows how to run a competition in a professional way. Solid officiating, real first aid stations, clearly organized brackets. I wanted to make our annual BJJ and submission grappling competition as much like that as possible. You know- a really first class international tournament where people would come from all over for the chance to compete. It has proven to be a tremendous amount of work already, and we are still several weeks away from the competition weekend. We have secured some great corporate partners, a super new website, and now the entry forms are pouring in. Guys from as far away as India, Bahrain and Cairo are signing up. It's going to be great.

What makes this tournament different? What will you offer?

This year, thanks to our corporate partners, we were able to actually lower the entry fees compared to the previous year. At the same time, the first 100 entries will receive a custom designed competition rash guard free. This year's event will be held a shopping mall where we will have a very large, air-conditioned area to hold our competition. It is very easy to find the venue because it is located next to a subway station. We will have a huge competition mat space, clean bathrooms, and a first aid station staffed by nurses sponsored by a major international hospital in Bangkok.

I completed the IBJJF Referee certification course in Los Angeles last spring and will do all I can to assure competent and fair officiating that protects the safety of our athletes in every situation. On Saturday evening we will have a Thai dinner for competitors at a local restaurant which is sure to be a great time. People need to sign up early to make sure they have a seat. On Sunday after the grappling competition, we will hold 4 amateur MMA matches with fighters from several countries. It is going to be very exciting.

Any last comments to the readers out there?

It Yeah, bring your "A" game and a positive, sportsman-like attitude to Bangkok on September 27 and 28. We are going to have a great time. See you there!
