Over the past week since posting Mickey's profile to the 'resident black-belts' section of BJJ-ASIA, there has been a tremendous amount of information against Mickey's accomplishments and status as a BJJ black-belt. While the majority of the comments made were by anonymous readers, I was able to receive confirmation from several individuals that have first-hand experience with Mickey. -Luke
Gerald is one of the earliest writers to speak against Mickey from Machado-Utah. Here are a few excerpts from an e-mail I received from Gerald about Mickey.
Mickey was one of my best friends for quite a while. I honestly care a lot about the guy but he made a "business decision" (his words). And started to wear a black belt. He received his purple from Jeff Kunze before the PanAms in 2007....
A couple of weeks after the PanAms, Mickey had a very tough time . . . actually he was crushed in both the Gi and No-Gi competitions, Mickey went to Brazil and when he came back he was wearing a black belt. The rest of the story is in the post linked to from the blog address you sent me....
Mickey on the other hand just is not a black belt. He is not a Machado representative.
I had the pleasure of meeting John when he was in Bangkok a few months back on business and took the opportunity to ask if he had met Mickey or knew of his new academy.
This guy did show up for a while. He is not good at all. He wore a white belt and performed like a white belt. A bit later he has his own school. Whatever....
taken from comments section of BJJ-ASIA:
I am in full agreement with Gerald. He and I trained with Dave Hagon and Mickey. Mickey is a purple belt, he left for brazil and was there for 15 days then came back saying he was a black belt under eduardo telles (which is a lie and telles confirmed it was a lie at a local tournament here). Mickey is not a legitimate black belt...he promoted himself as far as we can tell..as for the national championship..its my understanding there was 1 other guy..and he didnt show. He has trained under Rob Handley, Jeff Kunze, and both of them will tell you that he is not a black belt...barely even a purple if that. Mickey has a rough day ahead if he ever enters utah again. in fact..the machado utah team will involve attorneys if mickey ever again claims to be affiliated in any way with us. He is not legitimate in any way.
To whom it may concern,
My name is Aaron Huntsman head of Lehi Judo Club in Lehi, Utah. I want to set the record straight regarding Mickey Choi. It has come to my attention that Mickey is claiming to have a black belt in Judo from our club. This is completely false.
Mickey trained with us for a few months this year (2008) but never received any rank from our club. As far as we are concerned, he is still a white belt, novice competitor in Judo. I considered him a friend, but I cannot allow him to use the reputation of our school to misrepresent others. If you have any questions or need specific information, feel free to contact me.
