Besides having some technical difficulty with attaching youtube files and pics, I now have a chest-cold. I was able to train at AKA for two sessions and was planning on training at Ralph Gracie's academy in downtown San Francisco but now it may just be a visit to take some pics. I hope everyone is feeling better than I am at the moment. We've got a big tournament this coming weekend in Manila, along with the Mike Fowler seminar being held at Newbreed Philippines. 11.29.2007

Well, I am still in California but am having trouble posting the items that I have to share. There is video/pictures from the recent seminar at Kowloon BJJ along with my own pictures taken at American Kickboxing Academy with Dave Camarillo. Ugghh. I even tried posting at the local Mac store but there's something kooky with youtube. Anyways, I will be posting these things as soon as I can but just wanted to let people know that I haven't run dry of info to share.11.26.2007

I won't assume that everyone knows what Thanksgiving is but I'm sure the word will spread if it hasn't already. I can see American holidays like Halloween begin to find their way onto the Bangkok calendar, even if it's just another excuse to party. Anyways, I now find myself in the aftermath of a food induced coma after last nights Thanksgiving dinner in San Jose, CA. I'll be here for another week before heading back to Bangkok. Give me a day or so before I can begin training. I'm still sore from training in New York, hehe.11.20.2007

If you get a chance, I highly recommend stopping by as the instruction, vibe and quality of training is great. More and more I find myself packing my gi or at least belt when I traveling in hopes of getting some mat-time when away on business. -Luke

BEIJING: PEDRO SCHMALL
Pedro, could you give us a little background on where you're from and how you got started in BJJ? Who have you studied under and who gave you your black belt? How many years?
I am from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I use to compete in surf tournaments and I never won, it was when I had 15 years old. Many of my friends said to me at this time “you have body type to do jiu-jitsu” (Later I understood that any kind of body type is good for jiu-jitsu). So I was visiting an academy and fell in love immediately. Training twice a day plus my background from my childhood in judo and the fact that at this time only blue belts use to be able to compete, I got my blue belt in 1 month because my instructor would like to see me competing in a youth tournament. I won this tournament, and it was the first thing that I won in my life, and was the first of a sequence. It was in 1989. My first instructor was Fernando Pinduka a black belt under Carlson Gracie that taught me a solid base of the basic BJJ, when I got better and looking for strong partners to train with, I went to study under Carlson Gracie. I had excellent training sessions over there and increase a lot my abilities. After Carlson left to USA some of my friends changed to Royler Gracie academy and they were inviting me to visit there and take a look and feel the vibe there. I visited Royler’s academy once and never more left. Royler taught me a lot of BJJ and gave to me the brown and black belts. So since 1989 until now were almost 19 years of BJJ.
In the last year, you've taught in Bangkok, Taipei and now Beijing. Could you tell us about your experiences in each city? What was the transition like?
I had a wonderful time in these cities and I having it also here in Beijing. I love my time here in Asia. The people that I met on these BJJ academies, in each city, are really nice and I am felling really fortunate do having this experience.
How do you see BJJ in countries outside of Brazil, US or Japan where it is already established?
BJJ is spreading around the world and these three countries have the biggest percentage of people that are doing it. I am here in Asia helping to spread the BJJ bless, because it was a blessing in my life and I believe could be a blessing in everybody lives.
What do you see is as the most important step for BJJ to grow in a positive way in South East Asia?
I think so it is growing in a positive way already and everybody should take care of it keep the politics away and keeping the union inside the community even if you are from other academy or other country. Lets rivalries just to the competitions days, the academies owners should help each other instead try kill each other business.
With your recent move to Beijing, could you tell us about your new position at AOW? How did you get involved?
The company that hired me calls Adoria Entertainments. It has three arms the AOW (Art Of War) that is a MMA show, a MMA Team and the Beijing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that is a BJJ academy. I am teaching BJJ at the academy and coaching the MMA Team.
What is your daily and weekly schedule like?
I am teaching and coaching the MMA team on mornings and teaching at academies on evenings, Monday to Saturday.
What advice would you give to those just starting BJJ?
Just tell that BJJ is something wonderful and for sure will help you on your life. It is an excellent tool to relive the stress and keep you in shape. But you need to surpass the two firsts phases of your BJJ game when you are a really beginner, the head lock phase and the frustration phase, after that BJJ will be really fun to practice.
Anyone you'd like to thank or say hi to?
You know Brazilians don’t say hi … They send a hug! Hahahah. I would like to send a hug to everybody that I met in Bangkok, Ubon Ratchathani (Thailand); Taipei, Kaoshiung (Taiwan); Jakarta, Bandun, Bali (Indonesia); Beijing (China); especially to Nitti, Ole, Casey, Jon, Yuri and Andy that were whose brought me to those cities and all of my students over there. My best whishes to all, keep training and I hope see everybody on the mats soon! I would like to invite to anybody that is reading this interview to visit my blog at www.learnbjj.blogspot.com and I promise news posts soon with videos. And anybody that wants get in contact just reaches me by email pedroschmall@hotmail.com. Positive vibration for all!

Dear Art of War Friends and Fans,
Get ready for a night of action as the 9th installment of AOW comes back to Beijing! Let's examine the fight card.
In the Main Event, Brazilian Jujitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing expert, Erik Kalseth from Sweden will be making his Art of War debut against "The Wolf of the Plains" and undefeated Art of War veteran, Zhang Tie Quan, from China. Kalseth has been training hard at Legacy Gym in Thailand under the watchful eye of Danish Muay Thai superstar, Ole Baguio Laursen. Kalseth is optimistic about his fight against Zhang Tie Quan and is looking to hand the Chinese fighter his first MMA loss. Zhang Tie Quan remains undeterred and reminds his fans that he has been training hard and that he will once again emerge victorious.
Returning to this AOW fight card is Aotegen Bateer of China, who is a 2x China national Sanda champion. His opponent is Jose "Pitu" Sans of Spain, a veteran mixed martial artist and Muay Thai fighter who recently made an appearance on the martial arts reality show, Contender Asia. Both fighters look well-matched as both have racked up 1 victory in the MMA ring. Will Bateer give his fans a spectacular repeat of his last appearance in AOW7? Or will the tough Spaniard stop him in his tracks? Both are looking to launch their careers in the MMA world and a victory at AOW9 will certainly send them off in the right direction.
Making his first appearance in the Art of War ring will be K-1 superstar, Ole Baguio Laursen. His opponent is Art of War 7 veteran, Liu Guang Yao. Liu Guang Yao is coming off a draw in his last bout and is out for blood. He will be looking to finish his Danish opponent via KO this time around. Laursen is famous in the Muay Thai circuit for his devastating kicks and elbows and has faced such greats as Buakaw Por Pramuk and Andy Sowers. Laursen has also fought Japanese MMA superstars, Caol Uno and Genki Sudo. Always explosive and entertaining, Laursen has been perfecting his ground fighting skills and predicts a victory over Liu Guang Yao via submission!
Also on the fightcard is Croatian, Zidov Dominik of Contender Asia fame. His opponent will be Wang Guan of China. Zidov, nicknamed the "Devil" for his fierce tattoos and aggressive fighting style, is looking to prove that his appearance on Contender Asia was not just a fluke. Dominik is the 2006 All Swiss Sanda champion and the current All Swiss Muay Thai champion. Wang Guan is unfazed by his opponent's credentials. Despite his youth, Wang Guan displays maturity inside the ring well beyond his 22 years. Calm and collected during his fights, Wang Guan is a calculating fighter with knock out power in both hands. He is a skilled opponent both standing and on the ground. This will be a war!!!
After a tough fought DRAW in AOW8, Dai Shuang Hai returns to the ring to face Muay Thai superstar, Tadsapol "Iron Leg" Sinan of Thailand. Tadsapol is a veteran Muay Thai fighter with over 120 Muay Thai fights and 80 victories to his credit. He is ranked #6 at Lumpini Stadium, the most prestigious Muay Thai arena in the world. He has been working extensively on his ground fighting skills and is looking forward to showcasing those skills to his Chinese opponent. Dai Shuang Hai is a Chinese Sanda veteran and holds an undefeated record of 6-0-1 in Art of War. Dai Shuang Hai is coming off a disappointing draw in AOW8 against Indonesian fighter, Fransino Tirta, who pushed Dai Shuang Hai to his limits in their last engagement. This time around, Dai Shuang Hai is looking to go back to his winning ways and wants to finish his opponent decisively in the ring.
Chinese fighter, He Peng "The Prince," will be facing off against tough newcomer, Sanun Somthong of Thailand. He Peng now has KO victories over 3 title holders in Mark Sangiao, Lennox Chance, and Filippo Cinti. He Peng possesses tremendous knock out power and will capitalize on his physical attributes to overpower his Thai opponent. Somthong is a veteran of over 60 professional Muay Thai matches and has been perfecting his ground fighting skills over this past year. Known for his speed and devastating combinations, he will be comfortable standing up or on the ground. This will be an exciting and fast paced fight and the outcome could go either way - KO or submission!
Nemat Bobomuhamedov of Uzbekistan, who displayed spectacular striking skills in AOW8 will return to face Chinese fan favorite, Yang Jian Ping. Bobomuhamedov was an awesome force to be reckoned with, and totally destroyed his opponent in the last AOW event. This time, he will be facing tough Chinese fighter, Yang Jian Ping, who disposed of Japanese jiu-jitsu expert, Setsuma Takeda in AOW6. Yang Jian Ping is very strong and fast and will be looking to take the fight to Bobomuhamedov. Bobomuhamedov will have to call upon his extensive sambo and judo skills as Yang Jian Ping is known for his great takedown skills. Will Bobomuhamedov be able to pull out a submission victory or will he opt for a KO? Will Yang Jian Ping have the skills to handle such an aggressive and fearsome opponent? Nobody can predict what will happen in this fight, but it is sure to be exciting and action-packed.
The undercard will feature 5 additional action-packed bouts featuring AOW veterans, Liu Jing Wen, Yang Liang, Wang Lei, Xu Lei, and Yang Meng Meng.
Don't miss a night of fights at the Art of War FC 10, Fists of Fury, on November 24, 2007.

SINGAPORE: RIGAN MACHADO SEMINAR
report by: Vince Choo
I recently attended a week long retreat with Rodney King and Rigan Machado in Singapore with members from KDT Academy (Malaysia). This year participants came in from Malaysia, Singapore, USA, France, Japan and the UK.
The martial arts retreat was held from 3 - 7 November at the Budo Academy under the Crazy Monkey Defense Program's Annual retreat.
Leading the retreat was Mr. Rodney King, and presenting the BJJ component, Mr. Rigan Machado with Mr. Steve Boyd presenting a small segment on basic clinch/grip fighting.
If you are unsure of what the Crazy Monkey Program is about you can learn more about it at www.crazymonkeydefense.com
The retreat was held from 3-7 November and the workout sessions were between 5-6 hours daily depending on which program chosen. This afforded the participants to learn directly from Rodney, RIgan and Steve. Mr. Machado conducted BJJ gi and no-gi sessions for an hour everyday, presenting his specialty techniques in "cross-sides/side control" position with the gi, fundamental drills that everyone should know, and guillotine chokes and the "Anaconda" choke in the no-gi sessions.
One very interesting quote from Mr. Machado who said right at the start of the seminar, "Jiu Jitsu is a very simple thing. It is the people who complicate it." Indeed, the way in which Mr. Machado presented the techniques and the way he advocated the manner in which they should be practiced was simplified and was without fluff. He carefully explained how and why each limb should be used, which parts of the body which should be locked, or space opened or closed down.
At the conclusion of the final workshop, Mr. Machado awarded Rodney with a BJJ black belt (previously awarded by Mr. Chris Haueter) and announced that the CMD program is affiliated directly with Mr. Machado's organization for the techniques and values the CMD program represents.
In addition, Mr. Machado announced his intention to organize a new BJJ organization next year which will provide support for the top athletes, providing BJJ instruction in key locations around the world (N.America , Brazil, Europe and Asia) with Singapore (Budo Academy) representing this new group.
Naturally many people asked Mr. Machado to autograph their belts and uniforms, the mandatory photo taking sessions and to roll. It is no wonder to see the high level skills that Mr. Machado has developed over the years and his undefeated 30-year record still holds strong.
On a more personal level, Mr. Machado is a very likeable and approachable person, excellent sense of humour and a great resource of stories about his past, his experiences and activities outside of BJJ. After all, life is not just about BJJ and he is the living example of how a balanced approach to training will lead to a better lifestyle. The next time you meet him, remember to ask him about his Singapore Python experience!

BLOG NEWS: BJJ-ASIA PATCH!!!

I recently ordered a limited run of BJJ-ASIA patches to help promote the blog. They are dye-sublimated onto heavy-duty canvas which means the ink is infused into the fabric, no fading or cracking. They measure roughly 6"x6".Now how can you get one of these? Well, if you contribute to the blog by way of article, consistent support with information and or report on events that I am unable to attend, then I will send one to you. Not everything submitted to me will be posted so please know I am particular about the quality of information on the blog. If you don't like it, make your own site.
I'd much rather trade these for your involvement/participation so please take part in giving something back by helping me post about the latest seminar in your area or submit a video from the latest tournament.
I have a lot of ideas in the works for t-shirts and other patches. This one is just to start things off but some of you may have noticed the drawing I did for Halloween (bjj fighter w/ skull). So, that and more will be on it's way.
